How Electronic Spreadsheets or Excel came into existence
We have Lots of Electronic Spreadsheets in today’s world Microsoft Excel, Apache OpenOffice Calc, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, WPS Office Spreadsheets and many more...
In today's post, I would like you to introduce you The history of the Electronic Spreadsheets.
LANPAR, available in 1969, was the first electronic spreadsheet on Mainframe and time-sharing computers. LANPAR was an acronym: LANGUAGE FOR PROGRAMMING ARRAYS At RANDOM
Dan Bricklin |
The MBA program at Harvard Business School had a lot of case study. Cases may consist of up to a few dozen pages describing a particular business situation. They often have exhibits, and exhibits often have words and numbers laid out in ways that make sense for the particular situation. They're usually all somewhat different. Here's my homework. Again, numbers, words, laid out in ways that made sense.
These cases had many calculations - we got really close to our calculators. One of the really frustrating things was when you've done all your homework, you come in the next day only to find out that you made an error and all of the other numbers you did were wrong. Most programmers in those days worked on mainframes, building things like inventory systems, payroll systems and bill-paying systems. But I had worked on interactive word processing and on-demand personal computation.
Dan Bricklin to do this he had two alternatives: Manually calculate it or Use a mainframe program
Instead of thinking about paper printouts and punch cards, Dan Bricklin imagined a magic blackboard that if you erased one number and wrote a new thing in, all of the other numbers would automatically change, like word processing with numbers. Dan Bricklin imagined that my calculator had mouse hardware on the bottom. Dan Bricklin could type some numbers in, and circle it, and press the sum button.
Dan Bricklin father taught him about prototyping. What we were trying to build forces you to uncover key problems. And it lets you find solutions to those problems much less expensively. So Dan Bricklin decided to build a prototype and went to a video terminal connected to Harvard's time-sharing system and got to work.
One of the first problems for Dan Bricklin was: How do you represent values in formulas?
But it wasn't too cramping -- you could still put any value, any formula, in any cell. And that's the way we do it to this day even today.
Bob Frankston |
Dan Bricklin and his friend Bob Frankston decided that we were going to build this product together.
Dan Bricklin did more work figuring out exactly how the program was supposed to behave.
Bob Frankston bought time on the MIT Multics System to write computer code on a terminal. And then he would download test versions to a borrowed Apple II over a phone line using an acoustic coupler, and then we would test.
Dan Bricklin wrote a reference card to act as documentation. It also helped me ensure that the user interface Dan Bricklinw was defining could be explained concisely and clearly to regular people.
VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet computer program for personal computers, originally released for the Apple II by VisiCorp. It is often considered the application that turned the microcomputer from a hobby for computer enthusiasts into a serious business tool, prompting IBM to introduce the IBM PC two years later. VisiCalc is considered the Apple II's value-added app.

VisiCalc sold over 700,000 copies in six years, and as many as 1 million copies over its history.
Bricklin thought there should be a far better manner for completing this task and complete calculation changed.
A spreadsheets program is an interactive pc software for organization, analysis, and storage of knowledge in tabular kind.
Spreadsheets developed as computerized analogues of paper accounting worksheets. The program operates on information entered in cells of a table. Every cell could contain either numeric or text information, or the results of formulas that mechanically calculate and show a worth supported the contents of alternative cells.
A program may additionally talk to one such electronic document. People are exploiting it for the last forty years and throughout these years, it's been upgraded with additional options.
We still are exploring new stuff every day and the best benefits of the spreadsheet are it will apply to multiple tasks.
- Numerous business tasks,
- Commonly with finance & statistics,
- Information management,
- Managing the statement,
- Maintain analysis data,
- Maintain inventory data,
- Billing, and Business intelligence.

Now, Microsoft Corporation originally marketed a spreadsheet program called Multiplan in 1982. Multiplan became very popular on CP/M systems, but on MS-DOS systems it lost popularity to Lotus 1-2-3.
Microsoft Corporation later released the first version of Excel for the Macintosh on September 30, 1985, a new milestone was laid by Microsoft Corporation and the first Windows version was 2.05 (to synchronize with the Macintosh version 2.2) in November 1987.
Today, there are numbers of spreadsheets software programs like Microsoft Excel, Apache OpenOffice Calc, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, WPS Office Spreadsheets and many more spreadsheets software for Number Crunching, Charts and Graphs Store, Import information, Manipulating Text Templates, Dashboards Automation of Tasks and Much more additional and explaining tool existence.
However, Microsoft Excel is most generally used we all popular among the industries we enjoy using excel for its capability that it can cater today.
Hope you enjoyed reading the history of electronic Spreadsheets / Excel came into the following area unit the few things that it will do for you.
